The Japanese-only restaurants do exist. There’s a few in the more shady areas of Shinjuku.

there are actually many Japanese-only restaurants (and clubs). Some even have signs on the door that says”no foreigners allowed” lmao that’s so messed up.
Also there are some in South Korea as well.

It’s actually true that there are Japanese only restaurants. I’ve sat down at a restaurant and the server ignored me and my friend for over 15 minutes
and then Japanese people came after us and the server helped them immediately. It’s very rare but those restaurants exist in even Tokyo.
(日本人専用のレストランがあるのは本当です。私はレストランに座ったことがありますが、サーバーは私と私の友人を15分以上無視していました。

@Josh trust me, I called “sumimasen” many times. It was also a u-shaped counter, and he watched us take a seat. He made a choice not to serve us.

No it’s totally true that there is “no foreigners” signs in Japan, even Tokyo. Plenty in Kyoto. That’s on restaurants a lot, or it will say “Japanese speaking people only”.
One gothic fashion shop on the Main Street of Harajuku that I really wanted to go into had a sign saying no foreigners. Totally a thing.
(いや、日本でも東京でも「外国人お断り」の看板があるのは完全に事実です。京都にはたくさんある。飲食店にもよく貼ってあったり、「日本語を話す人のみ」と書いてあったりしますよね。
どうしても入りたかった原宿のメインストリートのゴシックファッションのお店には「外国人お断り」の看板がありました。完全にアレですね。)

While I was stationed in Japan. I ran into several restaurants that we Japanese only. Sadly, it is a thing.
If you push it they will admit you to avoid public shaming but your service will be poor.
日本に駐在していた時に 日本人だけのレストランに 何軒か出くわしました 悲しいことに、それはあることです。

“Japanese-only” restaurants exist all over Japan, and can be found in many places, notably, Kabukicho and Ikebukuro. When coronavirus is considered a “non-threat”,
I’d love to show you when I’m there again! I go frequently. It would still be fun to go places where I am accepted, haha.

I experienced 2 japanese only restaurants. You couldnt make a reservation or they ignore you for 30 minutes

Unfortunately this is absolutely not always the case. I have seen several restaurants in Tokyo which have signs on the front door, written in English, saying “No Foreigners”.
I have been turned away from these places in the past, despite them having many free tables.

Those Japanese only restaurants do exist and in my personal experience they’re not that uncommon in some parts of Tokyo. I got rejected from at least 4 places.

The Japanese only restaurant is a real thing. It happened to me many times and the only place that would let us in was a 7eleven.

I went into a “Japanese Only” Resturaunt in Machida once. My girlfriend was Chinese and they didn’t know she was a foreigner, too.
As soon as we walked in they started telling her to take me out of there. When she spoke, they figured out that she wasn’t Japanese and told her to leave, as well.
I’ve found several Izakaya that were also Japanese only, but I think that’s because they cater more toward Japanese businessmen who are relaxing after work than because they didn’t want me there.
I was pretty upset at first, but knowing how people in the US sometimes treat foreigners, I got over it pretty fast. It is what it is, and there are plenty of places that welcomed me and I’d rather do business where I’m wanted.

i’ve actually heard from a lot of people who took part of the JET program that there are many japanese only restaurants and maybe you haven’t experienced it because you aren’t a foreigner?
i’ve even heard mixed japanese people saying they’ve been kicked out of restaurants even though they’re citizens
